American Idol - Whitney Houston and Stevie Wonder Night

So last night, the girls sang Whitney Houston songs and the guys took to songs by Stevie Wonder. All in all, everyone did a great job. I'll start with the ones that were the least impressive.

Shannon Magrane had a bad case of stage freight and her performance of I Have Nothing suffered because it. The judges, whose words are usually well chosen, spoke matter of factly. She was very unsure of herself and it showed. I felt really bad for her. The judges singled her out at the end of the show, as the one in most danger of going home.

Next is, Elise Testone. In my opinion, she is also near the bottom. In rehearsal with Jimmy Lovine and Mary J. Blige, she was a bit testy and defiant. Definitely not the attitude to have with industry greats who are there to help. It carried over into her performance of, I'm Your Baby Tonight. She was uncomfortable and admitted she had "never heard of the song"! She struggled throughout the performance with her "power-rock" style. It was gravelly, lacked confidence and parts were pitchy. All in all, it was a train wreck waiting to happen.

Next is Jermaine Jones. His performance was not too bad. The only thing I would say is, he needs to work on voice control and stage presence. He has raw talent but needs a lot of work. I do not believe he will be the next A.I.

The best performance of the evening came from Jessica Sanchez. Her performance of I Will Always Love You, was nearly perfect. Other great performances came from Erika Van Pelt, Colton Dixon, Joshua Ledet and Hollie Cavanagh. In my opinion, these are the ones to watch this season. The results show is tonight. I think it's going to be pretty predictable.
